GEO means two things, and the assistants mix them up.

GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of getting AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews to name your business when a customer asks what to buy. A GEO tool asks those assistants your customers' questions on a schedule and reports whether you were named, who was named instead, and which pages the answers relied on.

The acronym has an older meaning too. "Geo" in marketing has long meant location: geo-targeting, geo-grids, local search. The two collide in exactly the question a small business owner is likely to ask.

We asked Gemini "What is the best GEO tool for a small business?" on 27 September 2026. It searched for "best geo tools for small business" and then "local seo tools for small businesses", cited five lists of local SEO tools, and recommended Google Business Profile, BrightLocal, Local Falcon, Whitespark, Semrush Local, Moz Local and Localo. Every one of them is a local search tool. None of them checks what AI assistants say about you.

That answer is not useless, and for a business with a shopfront it is half the picture. But if you came looking for generative engine optimization, this is the list you were after.

We took every tracker in our comparison of twelve whose entry plan cost under $100 a month, and added Frase from our comparison of tools that also write. outrankfast is ours, and it sits in the table on the same terms as the rest. Prices change often, so each tool's pricing page is linked below.

Profound, a name that comes up often in this category, did not list a self-serve price: a free 7-day trial, then a custom plan. Semrush's AI visibility tracking starts at $199 a month on its Starter plan.

What each one suits.

Otterly.AI is the cheapest way to watch four assistants at once. Lite covers 15 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot; Gemini, Claude and AI Mode cost extra. Otterly.AI pricing

outrankfast measures one assistant, Gemini grounded with Google Search, and keeps the record behind each number: the full answer, the searches Gemini ran and the pages it cited. From those searches it suggests the pages you are missing, each with the searches it would answer. Watch checks 15 prompts daily for $49 a month; Grow, at $299, also drafts those pages. There is a free plan with 3 prompts measured every 30 days. outrankfast pricing

LLM Pulse covers five models for €49 a month, with 50 prompts checked weekly on each. A weekly check needs more weeks to settle than a daily one, and gives broader coverage in return. LLM Pulse pricing

Frase and Writesonic pair tracking with writing. Frase Starter includes 10 articles a month and can publish them to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix. Writesonic Starter tracks 50 prompts daily across ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. Pick one of these if you want the tool to write as well as watch. Frase pricing · Writesonic pricing

Nightwatch suits a business that also tracks Google rankings: its Starter plan adds 500 keywords to its 50 AI prompts, across six AI platforms. Nightwatch pricing

Peec AI and Sight AI sit near the top of the budget. Peec tracks 50 prompts daily on three models you choose. Sight AI sells credits that pay for both checks and articles, across five assistants. Peec AI pricing · Sight AI pricing

What a small business needs from a GEO tool.

A small business rarely needs the most coverage. It needs a clear answer to a few questions, and a next step.

  • The assistants your customers use. If your buyers ask ChatGPT, a tool that skips ChatGPT measures someone else's market. If you care most about Google, Gemini and AI Overviews are what to watch.
  • Your own questions. Ten to twenty buying questions, written the way your customers ask them, beat a large generic set.
  • A daily or weekly check. Answers change from day to day. In our own data, ten Gemini answers to one question named 34 different businesses between them. A rate needs many answers.
  • The answer behind the number. When you are left out, the stored answer, the searches and the cited pages show you why, and which page to write.
  • A price you will keep paying. GEO results move over weeks and months. A $29 to $49 plan you keep for six months tells you more than a $99 plan you cancel after one.

Mistakes to avoid.

Four habits waste a small budget:

  • Tracking only questions with your name in them. "What is Acme?" tells you what an assistant knows. "What's the best invoicing tool for a small agency?" tells you whether it recommends you.
  • Checking once and deciding. One answer is a sample of one; judge a rate over two weeks or more.
  • Buying more prompts than questions. Fifty prompts help only if you have fifty questions buyers ask. Ten good ones beat fifty padded ones.
  • Paying for assistants your customers do not use. Coverage you never read is the most expensive line on the plan.

Start free before you pay.

You can learn most of what a small business needs without a subscription.

  • By hand. Ask your ten buying questions in ChatGPT and Gemini on a few different days and write down who was named. How to check if AI search engines mention your brand walks through it.
  • Semrush's free checker. Three checks a day without an account, across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, drawn from Semrush's own database of prompts.
  • outrankfast's free plan. Three questions you choose, asked on Gemini six times each, every 30 days, with each answer, search and cited page stored.

If you are a local business.

Here the answer Gemini gave is worth keeping. When customers ask an assistant for a plumber, a dentist or a café nearby, the answer leans on local data. When we asked Gemini how to get a business recommended, it called a complete, accurate Google Business Profile a significant signal for local recommendations.

So a local business has two jobs. Keep the Google Business Profile, listings and reviews current, which is what the local SEO tools help with; Google Business Profile itself costs nothing. Then check whether the assistants name you on the questions your customers ask, which is what a GEO tool is for. How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini covers both.

Questions people ask.

What does GEO stand for?

Generative engine optimization: making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews to find, read and name. It is unrelated to geo-targeting, though the two are often confused, by people and by the assistants themselves.

What is the cheapest GEO tool?

Of the tools we priced on 26 September 2026, Otterly.AI's Lite plan was the cheapest paid option at $29 a month for 15 prompts. Semrush's AI Search Visibility Checker and outrankfast's free plan cost nothing, with tighter limits.

Does a local business need a GEO tool or a local SEO tool?

Often both jobs matter. Local SEO tools look after your Google Business Profile, listings and map rankings, which AI answers about local services also draw on. A GEO tool checks whether the assistants name you when a customer asks.

How many prompts does a small business need to track?

Ten to twenty buying questions covers most small businesses: the best-of, alternative, comparison and how-to questions your customers ask before they choose. Entry plans from $29 to $99 a month track 15 to 50.
